Title: Grit Between Your Toes

The sun bakes, turning the white sand to shards of hot glass. Simple leather is hardly enough protection, especially when the grains slide over the sole and underfoot. Each step, a shake of the foot brings momentary relief, but only until the next step, when the pricks of fire sear again. One would think, in this heat, as little clothing as possible would be the best option, but that left tender skin exposed to the rays that burned everything away, washing out all colour, leaving only white sand and black shadow.

A shadow. What was casting a shadow? A ridge of sand, the peak of a dune? Looking up was painful, light piercing eyes and leaving purple afterglow. Triangle peaks in the distance. Shade. Blessed, blessed shade. The sand being ground into feet goes unnoticed when the goal is cool shade and possibly water.
