Title: Memory Box

Jessica dug through the bottom of her closet. So far, she’d only found one of her go to black heels.

“I know you’re in here.” She pushed aside the swinging pant legs.

“Jessica! We’re going to be late.”

“I’ll be right there.” Her fingers jammed into a box she’d forgotten about. She pulled it out and the missing shoe fell into her lap.

A fine layer of dust covered the old box. She lifted the lid and found her favorite pair of shoes from high school. The well-worn sneakers were no longer bright pink, but crisp and clean memories floated around her as if they took place yesterday.

She’d spent most of her senior year in the front seat of Todd’s truck with Juke Box Hero blaring on the radio. It was one of the most exhilarating and frustrating times of her life. The good times started to crumble the moment she realized she was in love with her best friend.

She’d tried to keep it to herself, but when he started dating Gina, she had a hard time keeping quiet. Sure, Gina had a nice rack, but she was also the meanest girl in school. Todd deserved better and she told him so repeatedly.

“Honey, what are you doing?” her husband said as he walked down the hall towards her.

“Look what I just found.” She held up one of the sneakers.

“Those take me back. I still can’t believe you never told me you liked me in high school.”

“You had such bad taste in women back then. It wouldn’t have worked.” She held out her hand and he helped her up. “It all worked out eventually.”

“That’s true.” He leaned down and kissed her like it was the first time. “I would have dumped Gina in a minute if I thought I had a chance with you.” He took the dirty old shoe from her. “Do you know how hot you looked in these Chuck Taylors?”
