Title: A Kiss Before We Part

“How long?” She twirled the violets I’d picked between her thumb and forefinger, avoiding my eyes.

“My portal will open in five minutes.”

I touched the sheer fabric of her shirt, trying to memorize the feel of her skin beneath my fingertips. I’d had her last night and again in the morning, but it wasn’t enough. It would never be enough. And now, we were out of time.

“Kiss me?”

I didn’t hesitate. My lips found hers, hot and insistent, and I felt the violets whisper past my ear as she dropped them to anchor her fingers in my hair. The woods around us disappeared and there was nothing but her lips, her tongue, and her waist within the circle of my hands. A warmth erupted behind me and I gasped into her open mouth.

“No!”

She held my face pressed to hers with all of her feeble strength, but I had to pull away.

“It’s time,” I whispered.

“Take me with you.” Her fingers grasped at my neck; her eyes went wild. “I can do it!”

“I can’t.” I gathered her hands easily into mine and held them between us. “Traveling with me to the Underworld could tear you apart, Tess.”

“I can do it,” she insisted again. “The only thing that’s going to tear me apart is losing you again.”

“I’ll be back.”

The lie came easily. Too easily. But it didn’t ease the pain in my chest. I stroked the velvet skin under her chin and brushed my lips against her forehead, breathing her in one last time. She shocked me with another kiss, pressing her lips hard against mine.

“Okay,” she whispered against my lips.

I stepped backwards toward the warm portal. As I looked into her blue eyes, I knew she’d seen through my deception. I closed my eyes to her pain and stepped back into the flames.

She hit my chest full force just before the portal closed and I growled in surprise. Her eyes were focused on mine as she clung to me. The portal swirled around us and I held my love to my chest, praying that I could protect her from the coming storm that would drag us both down to Hell.

  2. Love can find a way, yes? There is still a note of hope in this, I am curious what you could do with this if you chose to continue the story. I want to know what battle they would be heading into. Great job.
