Title: The Goblin Prince

This was what he loved most about her. The children swarmed around her – kids she never met who were drawn to that magic energy that surged around her at every moment. She sat cross legged on the beach, a pile of sand raised above her head in cupped hands.

“And when the goblin prince knew that that caravan of travelers were in the wide pass, he readied the trap. Soon, the princess would be his.”

She let the sand slip between her fingers and the children gasped in terror as the falling sand fell into the pass, trapping the imaginary caravan. Her eyes flitted up to his and she winked gleefully. His heart soared, but he kept his face impassive. She mustn’t know.

Her voice took on dark tones as she spoke of the princess’s peril and the children watch wide-eyed as the story came to its conclusion.

“But what happened, lady?” one of the toddler’s said, her chubby hand placed dramatically on her cheek. “Did the goblin eat the princess?”

“Oh, silly. He wasn’t that type of goblin. He swept in and saved her at the last minute, her and all of her companions.”

“Why?” they all asked in unison.

She looked up at him, her eyes both innocent and knowing at the same time. “Because he loved her, of course.”

  5. Short and sweet: made even more endearing and poignant by its brevity. Even a goblin king can show his soft underbelly when love rolls him over!
