Title: The Sign Within

Janie’s purse slipped from her shoulder. She caught the strap and the bag knocked against her leg as it swung back and forth with her easy stride. The blistering sun kissed her cheeks. Sweat pooled at her nape, the heat slowing her progress through the street fair.

She didn’t know why she even bothered attending this year. With no money in her pocket, she’d be taking no treasurers home. She brushed her frizzy hair off her face and stared up at a wall of signs. Some portrayed places, others displayed simple directions, but not one inspired her to smile.

The fair usually inspired her to write, to paint, to enjoy a new recipe, something, but today she got nothing.

She stopped in front of an empty spot on the wall. The plain wooden fence captured her attention. In the nothing, she let go of her worries and let the sounds of the fair wrap around her. In the nothing she let her lungs breathe back in the possibilities of life, of its mystery. She’d found something to take with her after all.
