Title: That Fateful August Day

Desmond dove into the swimming pool, an image of Desiree forming in the swirling bubbles before his eyes. Thinking it safe to survive the memory, he forewent the annual trip to their private beach, where they celebrated their birthdays, until last year. He, desperately, needed to forget that sneaker wave that tossed them into the turbulent surf. The rogue wave pounded their helpless bodies into the whirlwind strength of tumbling water. When he slammed against the hard bottom of sand, his eyes blurred. Focusing amid the blur and ignoring the burning sensations bruising his skin, he watched Desiree’s head pound against a rock. The retreating riptide sucked her out into the ocean depths. Desmond crawled to the beach, collapsing in defeat, after trying to save Desiree.

This August, Desmond, hesitantly, remembered their birthdays in the backyard. Submerged in the clear swimming pool water, he reached for Desiree‘s image in the bubbles, gurgling from his exhaling gasp. He surfaced from the mirage, choking with the chlorinated water and realizing he never could celebrate the birthday he shared with his identical twin sister, taken from him forever.
