Title: A Child’s Game

Isabelle scattered her playthings on the ground before her and covered her eyes with a tinkling laugh.

“One Mississippi, two Mississippi...”

When she reached ten, her toys would spring into action. What games would they play today?

“Three Mississippi, four Mississippi...”

Today she’d sneaked into her father’s office and stolen some of his special trinkets. Daddy’d told Isabelle not to play with his things, but it was just this once. She’d be very extra careful with them and put them back when she was done. Oh, she was excited to see what Daddy’s toys would do on her game board.

“Five Mississippi, Six Mississippi...”

The little men sat perfectly inside of their dusty green machines. Isabelle wondered what the long pipe-shaped objects on top of the vehicles might do. She wondered if they would make firecrackers or just a loud noise.

“Seven Mississippi, Eight Mississippi...”

Isabelle could hardly contain her glee. As long as Daddy didn’t catch her... As long as Mother didn’t see... Oh, what fun she would have today.

“Nine Mississippi, ten Mississippi, and GO!”

*Boom*

The fire from the gun bloomed up and tickled Isabelle’s nose and she recoiled from her toys in fear. They’d never done that before. More gun boomed and Isabelle saw the first little man bleeding. She cried out in horror and covered her eyes again.

“Daddy!”

Playtime was over.
